Hand Association Leadership Academy

The Hand Association Leadership Academy (HALA) provides a pathway for enhanced engagement and leadership develop within hand surgery and the AAHS. HALA participants can expect guidance in leadership development, mentorship in career development and advancement, and valuable networking and community building opportunities throughout the 2-year program cycle.

HALA candidates are AAHS members within their first 5 to 10 years of practice as a hand surgeon who have demonstrated interest or active involvement in research, education, scholarship, leadership or service in hand surgery through the Leadership Academy application process. Priority will be placed on members within their first 5 years of practice. The HALA application will collect basic information, CV and a brief statement of interest.

Leadership Development

  • Committee involvement: Participants appointed to active roles on AAHS committees, offering exposure to the society’s operations, strategic initiatives, and governance processes.
  • Leadership webinars: Small-group, interactive, leadership-focused webinars led by leaders in hand surgery and within AAHS.

Career Development & Advancement

  • Junior Moderator opportunities: Early career participants may serve as junior moderators during the AAHS Annual Meeting to develop public speaking and leadership skills.
  • Career Development webinars: Closed, interactive, small-group sessions focused on career growth, from academic advancement to work-life balance.
  • Mentorship: Direct engagement with AAHS leaders and HALA alumni to foster meaningful professional relationships.
  • Pathway to future leadership: Engagement in HALA provides pathways to ongoing involvement and potential leadership roles.

Networking & Community Building

  • Peer network group: Dedicated communication platform facilitating real-time dialogue and peer support.
  • In-person networking events: HALA networking opportunities at the AAHS Annual Meeting for direct interaction with leadership and peers.
  • Leadership exposure: Visibility within the AAHS community through structured and informal interactions.

Recognition

  • HALA participants will be recognized across the AAHS website, social media channels, and during the AAHS Annual Meeting.
