Joe Danyo, MD, was the driving force leading to the formation of the American Association for Hand Surgery. A nucleus of hand surgeons trained at Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, by Dr. Joseph Posch, was joined by other hand surgeons across the country to initiate this venture. Dr. Danyo was our first President and chaired the first meeting of this organization in Montreal, Canada, on October 7, 1971. In his inaugural address, Dr. Danyo stressed the importance of modern progressive care of the hand and a forum to disseminate new knowledge. He also voiced the guiding principle of the American Association for Hand Surgery as an inclusive organization for ALL surgeons and therapists with background and training in Hand Surgery.
Since its inception and first meeting in 1971 AAHS has grown substantially and has invigorated the Association’s membership and the profession. Dr. Danyo has remained dynamically involved AAHS’s progress and development. It is only fitting that AAHS should acknowledge Dr. Danyo’s important contributions by naming its most prestigious lecture after him.
